One of the more interesting discussions that has emerged as a common theme across the weeks has been the question of app vs. WAP. Localize, But Not Empower? The Role of Today’s Store Manager

At a technology event last week, one “retail focused” CIO panel discussed advances in retail BI, and as usual the conversation was about empowering merchandise planners, financial analysts, and other “home office” types to gain visibility into the farthest reaches of retail operations. But when the CIOs were asked about making “actionable information” available in something approaching “real time” to store managers, the CIOs were in agreement; to paraphrase the collective sentiment, “We don’t want the store manager to get distracted from his job on the sales floor.”

Halloween, Holiday, and Beyond: What Retailers Tell Us about Merchandising in 2009

It’s nearly October, 2009, and the US market is still short on cash, short on credit - short on jobs. The one thing we’re not short on is conjecture – “How are retailers prepared for Halloween?” “How will Halloween sales set up the holiday season?” “Once holiday numbers are in, what will that tell us about 2010?” It’s difficult to read, view, or listen to any source of news and information without these questions coming up, and why not? It’s human nature to try to make sense of chaos, and it’s not like there’s historical data to tell us what would “cyclically” happen next.
