A Twitter Manifesto

I have struggled with social media. Am I not a social creature? I guess not. But like it or not, I have a social job.I heard once that Twitter is about discovery and Facebook about connections. I think, sort of. Twitter is conversations too.

About this time last year, we at RSR compiled a punch list of to-do’s for retailers in the face of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. To refresh our memories (as if we needed it): in March ’09 we were coming off a miserable 4th QTR, and the 1st QTR was looking worse. Retailers were unable to acquire short term borrowings to buy inventory, and at the same time were holding back on purchases because they were unsure of demand.

The Totally Disrupted Movie Rental & Retail Business

I can claim personal experience in the movie rental and retail experience, as I spent a lot of time as a consultant helping two very large players in this space right around the turn of the century. Even then, everyone in the business saw the writing on the wall. Blockbuster had just sewn up revenue sharing agreements with the movie studios that allowed them to put out an enormous supply of new releases at the shelf. This helped them capture more revenue from the huge sweep of demand that followed a movie rental release, and life was pretty good.
