Retail Executive Summit: Execs Focus on Innovation, But Remain Wary
By Brian Kilcourse, Managing Partner
RIS News publisher Dave Weinand made the comment during his opening remarks at the 2010 RES (Retail Executive Summit) in San Diego last week that, “notwithstanding last month’s sales numbers”, retailers are beginning to turn once again towards innovation, and away from the hardnosed cost cutting the industry saw in 2009. Certainly, the opening day speakers supported the theme of the meeting (“The New Retail Dynamic- Strategies For Growth and Innovation”), which was attended by approximately 80 Retail executives.

Foursquare: Surprising Companies Making the Land Grab Early
By Paula Rosenblum, Managing Partner
A week ago, I don’t think I’d even heard of Foursquare, the latest and apparently most successful location-aware social network. I read a couple of short pieces on the app, and decided to try it out. More on Paul Singer
By Brian Kilcourse, Managing Partner
On June 11, I sent word of Target & SuperValu SVP/CIO Paul Singer’s passing to Tom Friedman, a long time friend, thought leader in the retail industry, and founder/CEO of the Retail Systems Alert Group. Tom was the organizer of the “Chicago show” (the Retail Systems Conference & Expo) that for many years was one of the most important retail technology events on the calendar. It was because of Tom that I met Paul, since Tom frequently employed me to moderate the CIO panel discussions).
