Walmart to Put RFID Tags on Jeans and Underwear. The Right Idea, but is it the Right Place?

Last week, Walmart made big news by announcing it plans to roll-out item-level RFID on jeans and underwear with plans to expand the number of items tagged if it works out. Most retailers and their suppliers long ago recognized that item-level is where RFID will deliver the real bang for the buck. We’re not quite sure an ultra-large-box retailer like Walmart is the best use-case for item-level RFID, but we’re encouraged to see the mega-retailer get the ball rolling.

This June, I participated in a round table on the topic of mobile. The discussion was bigger than one RPW, so I promised the rest later, and later is now. To recap, the round table consisted of six CIO's from a vast array of retail verticals, representing grocery, entertainment, luxury, and sporting goods represented. Our objective in the breakout session (At RIS News' Executive Summit) was to come up with and address some of the issues that mobile commerce faces currently. Questions 1 & 2 covered App vs. WAP and Where to Start with Mobile.
