To Arms! 2008 May be the Big Battle Year between Oracle and SAP

Last week Best Buy announced that the company has chosen SAP Retail to support the company's multi-channel, multi-brand, international strategy. Bob Willett, CEO of Best Buy International and the company's CIO said in a press release, "With a single, global information platform, we can continue to focus our resources strategically, successfully grow the enterprise, and ultimately serve as the International consumer advocate for consumer electronics."
The nature and timing of the press release suggests some animosity between Best Buy, a Retek customer, (now a key component of the Oracle Retail Suite), and Oracle, since it was the retailer who released the news, not SAP, and it came out during Open World week, Oracle's big annual bash. More...

Last week, Brian wrote a very thoughtful piece on gift cards. It got me thinking about gift cards because we're entering the heat of the holiday season starting this Friday.
Let me start by saying I am looking for input. Don't be alarmed, Im not asking you to take a survey. I'd just really like your opinion in our blog, or via personal e-mail. Specifically, I'm looking for input about why retailers have embraced gift cards as they have. I understand why consumers love them. By some accounts, they've become the gift selection of choice for 50% of gift givers and recipients. More...
