Last week I attended the Retail Pricing Summit in Chicago, where I had the opportunity to speak about future trends in retail pricing. It was a timely topic for me, as we have just launched a survey on the topic – we’ll report on that in January (and can always use your input – it makes our research that much more valuable). But by far the best presentation there was by Ira Kalish of Deloitte. He explained the forces and factors at play in the market, projected them forward into a few different scenarios, and then laid out what it means for retail.

It was hard to find a headline this week in any of the news services that come to my inbox that didn’t fit squarely into the “doom and gloom” category. Circuit City closing more stores. Linens n Things and Mervyn’s finally liquidating. Numerous executives stepping down and even more bleak predictions for the holiday shopping season. Times have been tough in Michigan over the past few years. As if ever-escalating vehicle manufacturer competition from Japan, Germany and Korea wasn’t enough, soaring fuel prices earlier this year followed by a global credit crisis have seemingly brought the state to its knees.
